Internet Radio – Pandora

by admin on August 20, 2007

Like most of you, we enjoy background music while we’re working. We used to listen to Sirius stations on our satellite TV hookup, but we found that if you listen to that all day – every day – there is a lot of repetition. We searched for an Internet radio station, but it was difficult to find one that met our tastes and didn’t require a fee to subscribe.

Then we discovered Pandora. A privacy-respected registration is required, but there is no fee. With Pandora, the listener has the opportunity to create “stations” which play the type of music preferred. This happens by specifying artists and/or songs of your choice. In addition to that music, Pandora also plays music that it feels is similar to the music you have requested.

If Pandora plays something you don’t like, you have the opportunity to “thumbs-down” it and not play it again. Conversely, you can “thumbs-up” suggested music that you approve, and it will add it to you list. If you have heard something too often, you can ask Pandora not to play it for a month. All lists are user-editable.

You can create as many stations as you’d like, and you can share your stations with other listener-subscribers as well as listen to stations others share. If you would like to listen to Pandora throughout your home, there are accessories available for purchase to do that as well.

Pandora is ad-based but that does not get in the way of the experience or usability. We have been listening to Pandora at work for several months now – and we like it.
